Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship Standard

Typical duration to gateway: 18 months

Delivery: Weekly day release and off-the-job training

Groundworkers: The Backbone of Every Construction Project

Groundworkers are the unsung heroes of construction and civil engineering, laying the groundwork for everything that follows. As the first to hit the site, they transform plans into reality, ensuring everything is set for the structural work to begin.

Groundworkers are highly adaptable, working across residential, commercial, and civil engineering projects. Whether for small subcontractors or large contractors, they’re at the heart of bringing any project to life, ensuring everything is built on a solid foundation.

Course Content:

  • Site Prep: Shaping and preparing the ground for what’s to come.
  • Drainage & Concrete: Installing drainage, pouring concrete, and building essential pathways.
  • Landscaping: Finishing the hard landscaping to perfection.
  • Safety First: Ensuring every step follows strict safety and legal guidelines.
  • Teamwork: Collaborating with supervisors and all trades to keep the project on track.
  • Expert Equipment Handling: Mastering tools, lasers, and setting-out equipment with precision.
  • Excavation & Utilities: Exposing and securing buried utilities, ensuring safe excavation.

Entry Requirements:

  • GCSE grade 1-3 or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths

If you do not possess these grades, you will need to achieve this level and also take the test for Level 2 Functional Skills English and Maths prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

Progression Opportunities:

  • Site supervisor: A trained or senior groundworker can become a site supervisor.
  • Plant operator: A trained or senior groundworker can become a plant operator.
  • Demolition specialist: A trained or senior groundworker can become a demolition specialist.
