Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard

Typical duration to gateway: 36 months

Delivery: Weekly day release and off-the-job training

Engineering Technicians will maintain the safety and effective operation of plant and equipment in one of the following industries that have activities that are part of the broader national infrastructure Engineering Sector: the electricity generating environment, which may use a range of different fuels including coal, gas, nuclear, wind and other renewable sources; telecommunications power plants; oil and gas refining; nuclear waste reprocessing; processing and production of chemicals; pharmaceuticals; human and animal food; cosmetics; petrochemicals; sewerage and the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas.

Engineering Technicians will undertake installation, testing, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance and repair of a range of equipment. This can sometimes be complex, and form as part of planned preventative and reactive maintenance programmes. They may also undertake decommissioning activities when plant is being removed from service.

Course Content – Choose Your Pathway:

  • Electrical Technician: You will position, assemble, install and dismantle electrical plant and equipment, which may include motors, switchgear, cables and conductors.
  • Mechanical Technician: You will position, assemble, install and dismantle mechanical plant and equipment, which may include motors, switchgear, cables and conductors.
  • Control and Instrumentation Technician:
    • Position, assemble, install and dismantle plant and equipment which may include instrumentation and control of temperature, pressure and flow systems to agree specifications
    • Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance procedures on plant and equipment
    • Replace, repair or remove components in plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition
    • Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in plant and equipment
    • Calibrate and configure instrument and control systems
  • Wind Turbine Technician:
    • Install, assemble and dismantle wind turbine plant and equipment, which will include pitch systems, yaw systems, switchgear, control systems to agreed specifications
    • Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance procedures on wind turbine plant and equipment including mechanical drive systems
    • Replace, repair or remove components in wind turbine plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition
    • Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in wind turbine plant and equipment

Entry Requirements:

  • GCSE grade 4 or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths

If you do not possess these grades, you will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

Progression Opportunities:

  • Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Standard
  • Senior roles: Technicians can move into more senior roles, such as senior team leader, project manager, or incorporated engineer.
  • Technical leadership: Technicians can move into technical leadership roles, such as staff engineer.
  • Engineering management: Technicians can move into engineering management roles, such as general manager.
  • Chartered engineer: Technicians can eventually work towards a chartered engineer status.
